“Read the Paintings” is the first thematic unit of series of “Read Art in Books” lectures held by the Pearl Art Museum and Shanghai Literature & Art Publishing House. In this unit, we begin with artistic appreciation of well-known classic painting and calligraphy in ancient China and extend to explore the history, society, humanity and folk behind the creation of these works. The Pearl Art Museum is looking forward to discover new perspective of appreciating and reading art in a way of “exploring old paintings from new perspective”.

At 2 p.m. of September 28, 2019 (Saturday), Mr. Nan Xiaoting (real name: Liu Diyu), associate professor of School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University delivered the first lecture of the “Read the Paintings” unit, “Read in the marketplace: cities and architecture in the painting of Along the River During the Qingming Festival of different versions”. As one of top ten famous paintings in China, Along the River During the Qingming Festival painted in Song Dynasty first depicted the overall and panoramic urban and rural areas and people’s daily life of ancient China. Various reproduction, pseudo copies, and remake of the Song original has formed into a painting subject. Mr. Nan Xiaoting compared Along the River During the Qingming Festival of different versions to learn about the evolution of Chinese cities and architecture in thousands of years with audiences.
